Meet Claude Cowork
Everything so far in this course has been about talking to an AI assistant in a chat window, you ask, it answers, you do the rest. Claude Cowork is different: instead of just answering, it can work directly on your own files and folders, taking on multi-step tasks and coming back with a finished result instead of just advice.

How it actually works
You give Cowork access to a folder on your computer, describe what you want done, and it plans the work before touching anything, you see and approve the plan first. It then works through the steps, splitting big jobs into smaller pieces that can run at the same time. You can watch, redirect it mid-task, or step away and check back on finished work.
Not a Claude-only idea: OpenAI launched a comparable agent mode called ChatGPT Work in July 2026, it takes a project brief and works independently for minutes or hours, connecting to tools like Gmail and Google Drive to deliver a finished spreadsheet, deck, or report. The core pattern, plan → work → deliver, is becoming standard across major AI platforms, not something unique to Claude.

Getting started
Cowork runs through the Claude Desktop app (Mac or Windows) and is included on Claude Pro and higher plans, no separate purchase. Web and mobile access is rolling out too: you can hand off a task from your phone and Cowork keeps working, so you can check back later from any device.
